Research profile:

Arnoud Lagendijk's research focuses on regional development and processes of regionalisation across Europe. He is especially interested in relational approaches to region formation, exploring the impact of the circulation of ideas, practices, and forms of governance. Other research themes: * the development of spatial planning concepts in The Netherlands

  • clustering and cluster policy (with emphasis on SMEs)
  • the localisation and investment strategies of multinational companies
  • the rise of alternative economic practices

Short [bw] CV

Born in 1963 in Amsterdam, Arnoud Lagendijk attended the Municipal Gymnasium in Dordrecht, near Rotterdam. He studied regional geography at the University of Utrecht, where he wrote his Master's Thesis on regional development in Spain. From 1989 to 1994, he was a research assistant at the Tinbergen Institute in Rotterdam where he received his doctoral degree in December 1993, and a lecturer in economic geography at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam. In 1994, he started working in the UK, first as a visiting research fellow at the University of Reading, and later as a Research Associate at CURDS, Newcastle, where he was involved in work for the EU and OECD. He has developed an expertise in the area of innovative approaches in regional economic development, focusing on the role of large firms as well as small and medium sized firms. From August 1998 to June 2002 he worked as a post-doc researcher within the Nijmegen School of Management, where he now works as a lecturer. At presents he writes primarily about the discourses of regionalisation in economic geography and spatial planning.
