Studying Astrophysics (Master)

In the Particle and Astrophysics specialisation, you’ll discover both the largest and the smallest scales in the universe. Apart from Astrophysics and High Energy Physics, this specialisation is also aimed at the interface between them: experiments and theory related to the Big Bang, general relativity, dark matter, etc. As all relevant research departments are present at Radboud University – and closely work together – you’re free to choose any focus within this specialisation.

A graduated astrophysicist has acquired a broad range of knowledge and expertise:

  • Knowledge of astronomy, physics, mathematics and computer science
  • Presentation skills
  • Writing skills
  • Programming skills
  • Data analysis
  • Problem-solving expertise
  • Analytical thinking

A Master's degree with a specialisation in astrophysics gives access to many professions, both within and outside science. Approximately half of all MSc graduates continues doing research in a PhD position. Others find jobs in a diverse range of areas:

  • Consultancy
  • Data analyst
  • Applied research
  • Governance
  • Finance
  • Education

Astrophysics is a strongly internationally oriented science. During your Master program there are good opportunities for an international internship, spending up to 6-12 months abroad. The Astrophysics Department has strong collaborations with sister institutes in Germany, Britain, France, the USA, South Africa, Australia, Chile and Brazil among others.

The Master tracks in astrophysics and high-energy physics jointly form the Master specialisation Particle and Astrophysics, which is part of the broader Master program of Physics and Astronomy.
