Monika Mościbrodzka and Heino Falcke of Radboud University are separately honoured by the British Royal Astronomical Society (RAS) for their pioneering research and leadership in creating and interpreting the first images of the black holes in the galaxy M87 in 2019 and our Milky Way in 2022 with the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) collaboration.

The European Research Council (ERC) has awarded a Synergy Grant, named “BlackHolistic”, of 14 million Euro to a team of Dutch, British, Finnish, and Namibian astronomers to make colour movies of black holes. They will build the first ever African millimetre-wave radio telescope in Namibia to achieve their goal.

Radboud University’s Radboud Radio Lab and the technology company ATG Europe will work even closer together to build a radio telescope on the dark side of the moon. This cooperative venture is part of the European Space Agency’s (ESA) larger programme of multiple missions to the moon.

Sterrenkundige Sara Issaoun, vorig jaar gepromoveerd aan de Radboud Universiteit, is onderscheiden met de Christiaan Huygens wetenschapsprijs voor ruimtewetenschappen. Ze kreeg de prijs vanmiddag uitgereikt door Minister Dijkgraaf van OCW in de Oude Kerk in Voorburg. Aan de prijs zijn een bronzen beeld en een geldbedrag van €10.000 verbonden.

Conny Aerts, professor of astronomy at Radboud University and KU Leuven (Belgium), was selected today by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters to share the Kavli Prize 2022 in astrophysics, the highest award an astrophysicist can receive after the Nobel Prize.
