Part-time programming job in Java for neuron-computer interface system

Radboud University
FNWI - DCN
Application deadline: 07-05-2026

Responsibilities

We are conducting a highly interdisciplinary and innovative neuroscience research project funded by NWO, in collaboration between the Donders Institute (Faculty of Science, Radboud University) and the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, together with international collaborators.

We are looking for a computer programmer with experience in Java to help develop a pipeline connecting neural optical signals acquired through the image-acquisition software MicroManager with the NCI system developed by Dr Thomas Nowotny (University of Sussex). A preliminary but functional pipeline has already been implemented, but it needs further development.

The project involves the development of multichannel optical probes on micro-photonic chips, the development of a neuron–computer interface (NCI) system, and the use of cultured iPSC-derived human neurons.

If you are experienced in Java programming and interested in contributing to fundamental neuroscience research and cutting-edge optics technology, this is a great opportunity.

You may work remotely, but occasional visits to the laboratory at Donders Institute will be necessary. The position is available immediately. The work will require approximately 50 hours in total, spread over about one year, involving modification of the code based on feedback from the experimenters.

The work can be done from home and will be paid on an hourly basis. We will have regular online meetings. Occasional visits to the laboratory will be necessary to test the system together with the experimenters.

Experiments will be conducted at the Donders Centre for Neuroscience (DCN), Faculty of Science, Radboud University, where a team of scientists — Dr Richard van Wezel, Dr Corette Wierenga, and Dr Marijn Kuijpers — collaborate to run the experiments.

What we expect from you

  • You have experience in Java programming, preferably for controlling hardware.
  • Knowledge in neuroscience is not required, but you are interested in both fundamental neuroscience and technological development.
  • You are able to occasionally visit the laboratory at Donders Institute.

Notes about the conditions of employment

Salary scale 6.8: €20,95 euro gross per hour (excl. holiday allowance, holiday money, public holidays and end-of-year bonus). This position lasts from 01-04-2026 until 31-03-2027 and is for 50 hours in total.
