Project: Participatory urban governance between democracy and clientelism: Brokers and (in)formal politics
Abstract: : This ethnographic research project investigates the role of brokerage in participatory urban governance, and its implications for state-citizenship engagement, political representation and decision making. It compares brokerage in four different cities: Rotterdam (the Netherlands), Manchester (UK), Cochabamba (Bolivia) and Recife (Brazil). Sven focusses on slum-community leaders within an internationally lauded slum upgrading and legalization program in Recife, Brazil.
