To gain more insight in someone's happiness and well-being, we work on the development of a conversational agent that speaks with people about their daily life and well-being in Dutch. We focus on developing language and speech technology for Dutch and to study how text mining can be used for personalizing such a system and how this can be applied to a large-scale investigation of wellbeing happiness and self-empowerment of people.
This study aims to investigate the processing of Dutch-English cognates embedded in English idioms by L2 Dutch learners of English in a sentence reading task.
A classic study shows that German sentences that contain nested dependencies between nouns and verbs are harder to understand that the Dutch versions with crossing dependencies. This is surprising, because one would think that most languages would opt for the easier structure. Our project replicates and improves on the study, in order to test if the unexpected result indeed holds up.
This research project investigates what determines successful learning of grammar by neural networks, and conduct this investigation with various languages differing in word order and morphological complexity.
Some interpersonal verbs, such as "amuse'' and "admire'', are associated with a strong bias in favour of either their subject or their object as the cause of the described event. Using self-paced reading and eye-tracking during reading, we investigate at which point during comprehension this bias plays a role.
In this project, we investigate how reading software with ASR can best be developed and implemented in the school practice and at home. A design research methodology is employed in which ASR-based reading software is designed based on teachers’, students’ and parents’ needs and requirements.

In this research project, we aim to explicate the relationship between executive control and language abilities, and its role in the recovery of mono- and bilingual persons with aphasia (PWA).
FoTo (Flankerend onderzoek Tweetalig onderwijs) is a longitudinal study linked to the pilot bilingual primary education (BPE), which started in 2014, when 20 Dutch primary schools started offering 30-50% of their lesson time in English. The study aims to investigate how BPE has taken shape in the participating schools and what its effects are on the English and Dutch language skills of the pupils involved.
