2in1 project (UK)

Beeldmerk-bilingual-onderzoek-(400px)How does a child’s one brain acquire and use two languages at the same time?
This is what we’re trying to discover at the 2in1 project. We want to find out how and under which circumstances a bilingual child’s two languages can influence each other.

Read more about our research.

Do you have questions or comments about the project? You can contact us via 2in1@let.ru.nl

Do you want to take part?

The 2in1 project will end in autumn 2022. We are currently working on our last two studies. For the first, we are looking for children aged 4 and 5 who are growing up bilingually with one other language alongside Dutch. We hope for as diverse a group as possible with many different home languages! For the second study we are looking for children between 6 and 9 years old who are being raised bilingually with Dutch and Turkish. If you sign up via the registration form, we will send you more information. Monolingual classmates or friends of the same age can also take part in the first study.

Q-BEx project

For a related project (the Q-BEx project), in which 2in1 project lead Sharon Unsworth is also involved), we are looking for children between the ages of 5 and 8 with one or more languages alongside Dutch. More information about that study can be found here. If you'd like to know more, please sign up via the 2in1 project and indicate in the 'comments' that you are interested in the Q-BEx project and we will send you more information.

Kletsheads Podcast

KH_Logo_ENG_2160Kletsheads is a podcast made by Sharon. The podcast focuses on multilingual children and is meant for parents, teachers and therapists. Some of our own researchers share their knowledge about multilingualism in Kletsheads! Chantal talks about the results of her thesis in the episode How bilingual children's languages influence each other.  Elly discusses how bilingual children deal with learning words in two language in the Dutch episode Hoe gaat het meertalige hoofdje om met woorden uit twee talen?

Kletsheads wins popularization prize

On Friday 4 February, it was announced during the LOT's Language Day that the prize for the best scientific communication project in the field of linguistics goes to two projects: the annual children's language festival Kletskoppen and the podcast Kletsheads.
