Spatial Cognition in Signers and Speakers
Prof. Asli Özyürek
Thinking and speaking about space are basic elements for our everyday communication. In sign languages, unlike in spoken languages, space is encoded iconically by the visual articulators. This project will investigate whether this aspect of sign language influences the spatial cognition of sign language users in a different way than that of spoken language users.
As part of this project a postdoc project on cross-modal language processing, a postdoc project on event representations, a PhD project on bimodal bilinguals and space and a PhD project on spatial cognition and memory are carried out.
