The first year (B1)

Programme B1 for English Language and Culture track

The first year of the Bachelor's programme has three functions: orientation, indication, and selection. These three functions are closely linked: you will get acquainted with the most important aspects of the academic approach to the English language and culture and you will be trained in the British English language, in linguistics, in the critical reading of English and American literary texts, and in the methodology needed to analyse literary texts in an academic framework. The foundation year offers an introduction to the main themes of the rest of the Bachelor's phase. At the end of the first year, you will receive a binding study advice that is based on your performance during the foundation year.

The following are the outcomes of the foundation year: you will have become acquainted, at introductory level, with the most important aspects of the academic approach to the English language and culture; you will have gained a solid language proficiency level; and you will have laid the foundation for the analytical skills that are required to pursue further training in both linguistic and literary topics of the programme. These include the ability to critically read English and American literary texts; having a basic understanding of the phonetic and syntactic analysis of standard English; the ability to academically formulate your position in a debate, in speech and in writing; having basic insight into the history of the English language and English culture.

The first year of the Bachelor's programme has three functions: orientation, indication, and selection. These three functions are closely linked: you will get acquainted with the most important aspects of the scientific approach to the English language and American studies (literature, history, culture, politics and theory) and you will be trained in the U.S. English language, in linguistics, in the critical reading of American and British literary texts, in the methodology needed to analyse literary texts in an academic framework, and in the critical approach to the history of the United States. The foundation year offers an introduction to the main themes of the rest of the Bachelor's phase. At the end of the first year, you will receive a binding study advice that is based on your performance during the foundation year.

The following are the outcomes of the foundation year: you will have become acquainted, at introductory level, with the most important aspects of the scientific approach to American studies; you will have gained a solid language proficiency level; and you will have laid the foundation for analytical skills that are required to pursue further training in linguistic, literary, cultural, historical, and political topics of the programme.
