Student Participation

As a student, you might come across issues in regard to your study programme. For example, you believe the manner in which a course is taught is insufficient, there are not enough computer facilities available, etc. At the Faculty of Science, there are various ways to voice your opinion, for example by means of the Curriculum Committee, the Student Assessor or the Faculty Student Council. You can read more about these organisations below. Annual elections are held for both of them, and, if you would like to participate in one of these, you can run to be elected yourself.

Programme Committee (OLC)

The Programme Committee examines and supervises the quality of the programme’s education, and identifies possible problems. They will then advise the programme coordinator, director of education, and the Examination Board about all the programme’s educational matters. The committee consists of four members from the academic staff and four students. The student members are elected during the annual student elections. During the formation of the committee, efforts are made to evenly divide the student members over the different years of the study programme.

The programme coordinators and directors of education are responsible for the content and general structure of the study programmes (for example the sequence of the courses or the amount of electives that can be chosen). When problems occur with regard to these matters, for example when students frequently lack the necessary prerequisite knowledge for a certain course, it is the task of the programme coordinator to propose a solution. Depending on the kind of problem, resolving the problem will happen after consulting one or more lecturers and/or the course coordinators, or the director of education.

Student Assessors

Each education institute has one or more student assessors that are on the board of an educational institute and take part in the various board meetings. The institute assessor also maintains direct contact with the Director of Education to represent the educational institute’s students. These meetings chiefly address policy matters concerning the institute (for example the introduction of the portfolio or the BSA). There is also a faculty student assessor who is present at a.o. Faculty Board meetings, FSR meetings and represents students outside of the faculty. This years student assessors are:

Electronic Education Survey

The OLC annually reviews the course surveys in order to gather the students’ opinions on their education. It is important that students fill out these surveys truthfully. The surveys often function as the basis of improvements in the study programme, therefore the opinions and personal experiences of the students are essential. So, carefully filling out the surveys are also very much in the interest of the students themselves! The course surveys can be found under the course on Blackboard. On the day of the final exam, the course surveys will open to students for a total time of two weeks.

These course surveys are processed automatically. The lecturers will send the results, together with their own course evaluation, to the curriculum committee. The lecturers will also indicate their points of criticism and suggest how the course can be improved. In case the results of a survey and/or the lecturer’s course evaluation present a reason to discuss certain issues, a small delegation of the curriculum committee, usually consisting of the chairman and secretary, will discuss the issues with the lecturer. In other cases, this is done by the director of education. If you wish to look into the results of a survey, you can make an appointment with the secretary of the curriculum committee. Information on the members of the committee can be found in the programme's prospectus.
