** Students of the English Language and Culture specialisation that commenced their studies before 1 September 2018 choose three electives in the B2 or B3 to a total of 15 EC, and two minors to a total of 30 EC. There are three slots for these electives and minor courses in the BA programme: the second semester of the B2, and the first and second semesters of the B3, with 15 EC free space per semester. A minor package assembled by the student (a so-called vrije minor) must be approved by the student counsellor and the exam committee. Students may select B1 courses to a maximum of 15 EC. For a summary of the rules regarding minor courses, see: http://www.ru.nl/stip/studie-informatie/studiegids-minorgids/

Electives cover courses in the fields of English linguistics and British and American literary and cultural studies (see overview below). Students may choose freely from these courses, but they are advised to take courses that prepare for the entry requirements of a relevant MA programme, such as the MA Linguistics, the MA Literary Studies, or the MA North America Studies. It is possible to expand the elective Translation Dutch-English and English-Dutch to 15 EC with an translation internship.
