Admission requirements and exemption regulations

The programme starts in the first week of  September each year. Our university has set a deadline for enrolment in Master's programmes given in English. Non-EEA residents who apply before April 1st will be guaranteed accommodation, support with visa and residence permit. If you apply after this date, we will still consider your application but we cannot give any guarantees. For Master's students from one of the EEA countries, this deadline is May 1st of each year. For Dutch students, the deadline is set to June 1st.

Admission requirements

In order to be admitted to the Research Master in Historical, Literary and Cultural Studies, you must have completed the associated bachelor's programme with an average GPA of 7.5 (out of 10) or higher and the bachelor's thesis with an 8 (out of 10) or higher. You must also receive a positive recommendation from the Admissions Committee following the mandatory admission interview.

Outstanding bachelor's students who do not meet the academic prerequisites can submit a written request for admission to the Board of Examiners. The board may impose additional entry requirements before granting admission.

Admission procedure

  1. A letter stating your motivation (approx. 300 words) and curriculum vitae; in the first you state your relevant skills, your motivation, the field of expertise in which you want to specialise and your own intended prospects for the future (including the contact information of one referee).
  2. Certified copies of relevant diplomas (BA/ MA), including an official summary of courses and grades.
  3. The results of your English proficiency test. For specification on the conditions visit the Masters website.
  4. A copy of your passport or id-card.
  5. A copy of your BA thesis (or, if applicable, your MA thesis)
  6. A letter of recommendation from your BA thesis supervisor (or another teacher) should be send by her/him or presented in a sealed envelope.

NB. Dutch students are asked to send in the documents in English. The interview will be held in Dutch.

Admissions Committee

The Admissions Committee will review your application and determine whether you meet the acceptance criteria. Suitable candidates will be invited to an interview to establish whether they are sufficiently qualified to participate in the programme. Additional admission requirements may be imposed at the discretion of the committee.
