Lab courses and study materials

Textbooks

All textbooks are available at the study association BeeVee with a discount for members, or at the bookstore for original prices (i.e. Studystore). More information will be available at BeeVee.

Microscope

During the lab courses of the first year you will be using a microscope extensively. These are rented by the Educational institute of Biosciences. During the orientation week, which is the first week of the first year, the microscopes (including a key for the microscope locker) will be handed out by Educational Support Biosciences (edusupport.biosciences@ru.nl). An insurance of €20 should be paid for renting the microscope. Every damage caused by the renter will be completely covered by the renter. In addition, it is not allowed to take microscopes outside of the hallway wherein the lab sessions are performed. At the end of the first year, the microscope and locker key need to be returned to Educational Support Biosciences. If the microscope is still complete and intact, you will receive the €20 insurance back. In case you want to buy or use your own microscope, please contact Educational Support Biosciences. They will be able to tell you which types of microscope can be used.

Practicum necessities

Other obligatory experimental necessities, like a labcoat, safety goggles, experimental cutting set, a good lens (10x magnification), coverslips and microscope slides are available at BeeVee.

Other costs

During the orientation week, the costs for the three user manuals (€20) during the first quarter will be charged. In short, the insurance €20, and the €20 for the manuals must be paid during the orientation week. So in total you should bring €40,- in cash to the orientation week before you are allowed to do any experiments or participate in the course.
