Programme B1 English Language and Culture specialisation

The first year of the Bachelor’s programme, also known as ‘B1’, has three functions: orientation, indication and selection. These three functions are closely interwoven. The programme will introduce you to the main aspects of the academic study of the English language and of American Studies (literature, history, culture, politics and theory) and provide you with American-English language proficiency and linguistics training. In addition, you will learn to critically read American and British literary texts, be familiarised with the methodologies needed to analyse literary texts in an academic context and critically approach the history of the United States. B1 provides an orientation to the main themes to be discussed in later Bachelor’s years. At the end of your first year, you will be issued tailored study advice based on your performance during B1.

By the end of your first Bachelor’s year, you will have familiarised yourself with the main aspects of the academic study of American Studies, acquired thorough language proficiency and mastered the basic analytical skills required to proceed with the linguistic, literary, cultural, historical and political elements of the degree programme. This includes, for example, the ability to critically read British and American literary texts, basic skills in analysing the phonetics and syntax of standard English, a basic understanding of the history of the English language and American culture, society and politics, and a basic understanding of and experience with the interdisciplinary working method of American Studies.
