Individual research internship

Because you do this internship instead of a think tank, you will work on the same learning objectives as during the think tank (see table below). This means that during your internship you will not only work on an existing research project within a research group that is related to the theme of the minor, but will also work on making the societal relevance of this project visible (valorisation).

You spend 280 hours on the individual internship - just as you would do on the think tank. This includes drawing up and working on the research plan and report, the final product and the evaluation.

Please note: There are entry requirements for the think tank:

  • Thematic minor: You must pass the theme course to be able to participate in the think tank or to start with the internship instead of the think tank.
  • Study Abroad: You must pass the course Study abroad: Academia & Society to be able to participate in the Think tank: Study Abroad or to start with the internship instead of the think tank.

Checklist:

  • With my intended internship, can I achieve all the learning objectives listed in the table under Research internship?
  • Does the research project fit with the theme of the minor?
  • Does the scope of my internship (including completion) amount to 280 hours?

If you can answer these three questions with 'yes', then your intended internship meets the most important criteria.

Think tank

Research internship

Afterwards you can:

…divide roles and duties within a group and work together constructively

…in consultation with the supervisor and the research group, divide tasks and work together constructively

…translate a societal question into a project plan for academic research

…make the societal relevance of a scientific research project visible in daily research practice

…present the outcome of the research in a clear and societally relevant way

… present the outcome of the research in a clear and societally relevant way;

…reflect on the group and research process

… reflect on working in a research group and on the research process

Time schedule

If you want to do an individual internship instead of a think tank you need the approval of the examination board. Make sure to send in your request at least 6 weeks before the start of the internship. In most cases this means that for an internship during the first semester you need to submit your request around 15 July. For an internship in the second semester you need to submit the request around 15 December.
More information about the procedure of finding an internship and the request to the examination board can be found on the website of Career Service.

Completion

  1. Research plan & report
    If you opt for a research internship instead of a think tank, the focus of your internship will be on doing scientific research on a societally relevant question. In the research plan you describe the structure of your research, discuss the relevance of your question in relation to the theme of the minor and explain how you want to work (incl. time schedule). The research report will contain the results of the various steps and have the form of a (scientific) paper.
  1. Final product
    With the help of the research plan, you will ultimately come up with an answer to the research question which you then need to present in a clear and societally relevant way. You can be as creative as you like: the final product does not have to be a written product, but can also have be a poster, infographic, video, animation, etc. Discuss this with your supervisor beforehand.
    When choosing the form and content of the final product, clearly keep the intended recipients (the general public) in mind.
  1. Evaluation
    At the end of your internship, you will reflect on your internship in a short report. This evaluation contains the following:
    • a brief overview of what you learned from working as a team;
    • a brief overview of what you learned during the research process;
    • a brief overview of what you learned from the setbacks and failures during this process.

Assessment

Because in this research internship (just like in the think tank), the process of cooperation, problem exploration and development of a final product is at least as important as the result itself, the internship will be assessed with a pass/fail. You will not get a grade.

Research at the Faculty of Arts

For more information about current research at the Faculty of Arts you can take a look at the websites of the two research institutes our faculty has:

  • Centre for Language Studies(CLS)
    CLS aims to achieve a deeper understanding of the nature of language and the way it functions by explicitly connecting and integrating research on the cognitive and social processes underlying language systems, language processing, language use, and language acquisition. CLS actively seeks to deploy its findings to optimise language-related tasks in society.

  • Radboud Institute for Culture & History(RICH)

    The mission of RICH is to make a significant contribution to the understanding of the changing place of Europe in the world, and to the changing world of which Europe forms a part.
