Programme of B1

Dear student,

We are working on solutions for hybrid education that will take place online and on campus. Therefore the instructional modes, number of exams, the form of the exams and/or assignments may change. You will be informed through Brightspace in case of changes. The course information in the Course guide provides an indication of what you can expect in the course.

In the case of not being able to attend one or more practical courses/lab days due to corona measures, the course coordinator will decide if the student is obligated to re-take the missed meeting and how this will take place.

The Bachelor's programme is comprised of three years of 60 credits (ec). Each year is divided into four periods (quarters) of 15 ec.

In the first year most courses that are offered, provide the molecular basis for the Bachelor's programme. The first year, however, also serves as a filter: if you are able to pass all first year courses, you should be able to handle the rest of the programme as well. If you fail to pass at least 39 ec in the first year, you cannot continue the programme (See the appropriate section on Binding Study Advice in this prospectus).

The first-year courses for each period are listed below, with the study load shown in parentheses (EC). The first year has a fully mandatory curriculum. The Chemistry and Molecular Life Sciences programmes in the first year overlap for 85%, the Science programme deviates a bit more.

Switching programmes?

You can use the first year to decide which aspects of molecular sciences are the most interesting for you and you can change programmes. It is best if you make your choice before the fourth quarter.

If you switch from MLS to Science after the first year, you need to take the courses NWI-MOL122 Chemical Analysis 2, NWI-MOL132 Vector Calculus, NWI-MOL133 Mechanics and NWI-MOL134 Electricity and Magnetism (or courses with corresponding content) elsewhere in your Bachelor's programme. Switching from MLS to Chemistry requires that you take up the following courses in your Bachelor's programme: NWI-MOL122 Chemical Analysis 2 and NWI-MOL136 Physical Chemistry 2.

If you switch from Chemistry to MLS after the first year, you can do so without without taking extra courses. If you have finished the first year of Science and want to transfer to MLS, you need to take NWI-MOL139 Sustainable Chemistry.
