Programme of Transnational eco-system based Water Management

Dear student,

We are working on solutions for hybrid education that will take place online and on campus. Therefore the instructional modes, number of exams, the form of the exams and/or assignments may change. You will be informed through Brightspace in case of changes. The course information in the Course guide provides an indication of what you can expect in the course.

In the case of not being able to attend one or more practical courses/lab days due to corona measures, the course coordinator will decide if the student is obligated to re-take the missed meeting and how this will take place.

Programme outline

Double degree programme in Transnational ecosystem-based water management

The 120 EC* double degree programme in Transnational ecosystem-based water management is partly taught at the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) and partly at Radboud University (RU). It consists of three phases:

  • Semester 1 + 2: compulsory course modules (Sep-Jan RU, Feb-Aug UDE)
  • Semester 3: project water management and elective courses (UDE or RU)
  • Semester 4: Master’s thesis (UDE, RU or externally)

Below, you’ll find an overview of the course modules, project work, electives and Master’s thesis.

Compulsory courses at Radboud University

  1. NWI-BM036A Orientation in Biology and Environmental Sciences (3 EC)
  2. NWI-BM038A Ecological and Environmental Concepts (3 EC)
  3. NWI-BM039A Management of Ecosystems (3 EC)
  4. NWI-BM075 Biodiversity Assessment (3 EC)
  5. NWI-MM002A Environmental and Ecological Modelling (3 EC)
  6. NWI-MM022 Water Governance and Spatial Planning (3 EC)
  7. NWI-MM019A Integrated Water Management (3 EC)
  8. NWI-MM018A Environmental Economics for Water Management (3 EC)
  9. NWI-MM021 Social Aspects of Water Management (3 EC)
  10. NWI-FFIL212 Philosophy of water management (3 EC)

Compulsory courses at the University of Duisburg-Essen

  1. Hydroclimatology and Sustainable Water Management (3 EC)
  2. Applied Hydrogeology and Application (4 EC)
  3. Water Quality Modelling (3 EC)
  4. Ecology and Protection of Freshwater Ecosystems and Aquatic Organisms (5 EC)
  5. Hydrobiological Field Trips (2 EC)
  6. Water-borne Diseases (2 EC)
  7. Basics in Hydraulic Planning and Hydraulic Works (3 EC)
  8. Waste Water Treatment (3 EC)
  9. Flood Management (2 EC)
  10. River Basin Management (3 EC)

Project water management (16 or 21 EC)

In this module, you’ll elaborate a small self-contained project or carry out research related to a project or activity in the field of water management. You’ll present the results in the form of an internship report and a presentation.

Electives (14 or 9 EC)

Both universities offer a variety of subjects for deepening knowledge in related scientific fields, for example in ecology, microbiology, engineering and economics. You’ll have the opportunity to follow multiple courses for 14 EC in total. These courses should be at academic level, and at least 8 EC should be master course level. The electives chosen are assessed by the Examination Board to see if the level is sufficiently high.

Master’s thesis (30 EC)

The final semester of this programme consists of a research internship including a Master’s thesis (NWI-TWM22). This internship can be performed at one of the double degree programme universities, but most students choose to perform this internship at another university abroad or at a water management related organisation.

* European Credit Transfer System (ECTS)
The workload of an academic year is equivalent to 60 European credits (EC).
