Description of Physical Chemistry

The specialisation Physical Chemistry offers education in connection with state-of-the-art research aiming to fundamentally understand, design and control the functioning of molecules and materials. This specialisation appeals to Chemistry students with a strong physical interest and Physics students who focus on chemical aspects. For Science students with a bachelors specialisation in Chemical Physics the track is especially suited.
Examples of topics are self-organization of complex molecular systems, structure-function relationships of nanostructured materials or fundamentally understand the structure of molecules and the way they interact. This involves theoretical skills and the use and understanding of advanced spectroscopic tools to gain insight in structure and dynamics of molecules and materials in relation to the intended functionality.

The courses in this specialisation are strongly related to the research within the Institute for Molecules and Materials. The specialisation related research interships will generally be done in that institute, but you can also go abroad, or to industry for one of the interships.

The programme comprises four compulsory courses (15 ec) and one specialisation-related internship. The intership includes practical work and report, as well as a literature thesis of 6 ec and, optionally, one or two courses (max 6 ec) relevant to the internship. A list of available research departments can be found elsewhere in this prospectus.

In case you cannot start in September, but enrol later in the year (with permission of the Admissions Office), you start with the research internship and take the mandatory courses at the next available option.
