Transition rules

The transition rules that apply to the master Computing Science can be found in the Education and Exam Regulations. Below, we describe the most relevant points that apply this year.

General transition rules

Some courses in the master Computing Science are offered once every two years, alternating with other courses. In general, at the request of students who did not pass the exam last year and who need to complete the course to obtain their degree this year, one exam opportunity can be scheduled in the year in which they are not offered. If this applies to you, please contact the study advisor before November 1st.

New courses

Two new courses are offered this year in two different specialisations:

Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science

Last year, the programme structure for the master specialisation Mathematical Foundations of Computing Science was more aligned to match that of the Data Science and Software Science specialisations. For students who started the MFoCS specialisation in or before 2018-2019, the transition rules are listed in last year's prospectus and Education and Exam Regulations.

Course specific transition rules

For specific courses in 2020-2021, the following changes and transition rules apply (courses are listed in order of course code):

Old course (and, if applicable, Specialisation)
Change Replacement course or transition rules

NWI-I00032 Advanced Programming

The course has moved to the spring semester. None

NWI-IMC010 Type Theory and Coq

The course has moved to the fall semester. None.

NWI-IMC035 Software Analysis

This course is no longer taught. None. A new elective course in the Software Science specialisation is NWI-IMC059 Software Product Lines.

NWI-IMC036 Category Theory and Coalgebra

The course has moved to the spring semester. None.

NWI-I00139 proof Assistants

(Specialisation: MFoCS; Software Science)

This course was not offered in 2019-2020, but is offered again in 2020-2021. None.

NWI-IMC011 Semantics and Domain Theory

This course is not offered in 2020-2021, but will be offered again in 2021-2022. For students who took this course last year but did not pass the exam, a final exam opportunity can be scheduled if this is needed to complete the master degree. Please contact study advisor Perry Groot before November 1st if this applies to you.
NWI-NM048C Machine Learning This course has been split up into two smaller courses: NWI-NM048B Advanced Machine Learning (6 ec), and NWI-NM048D CDS: Machine Learning (3 ec). Students take the two new courses.

NWI-WM072B Complexity Theory This course is not offered in 2020-2021, but will be offered again in 2021-2022. For students who took this course last year but did not pass the exam, a final exam opportunity can be scheduled if this is needed to complete the master degree. Please contact the coordinator of Mathematics, Emily van Mierlo, before November 1st if this applies to you.
NWI-WM0120C Computability Theory

(Specialisation: MFoCS; Software Science)
Contrary to earlier plans, this course will not be offered in 2020-2021. Students can take the Mastermath course NWI-WM223 Computability Theory (8 ec).
SOW-MKI49 Computational Neurocognitive Modelling The course has been renamed to: NWI-MKI49 Neural Information Processing Systems. None.
NWI-FMT020 Bio Economy and NWI-FMT025B From Lab to Clinic (elective courses in the SMI programme) These courses are no longer offered as of 2020-2021. For students who took this (these) course(s) last year but did not pass the exam, a final exam opportunity can be scheduled if this is needed to complete the master degree. Please contact the coordinator of the SMI-programme, Rosalie van Zelm, before November 1st if this applies to you.

For transition rules of older curricula: please check the transition rules in last year's prospectus or contact the student-advisor Perry Groot to discuss options.
