Master programme Information Sciences

There is hardly a company in the world that doesn’t use ICT in some shape or form and many of them face problems in getting ICT to do what it’s supposed to do. So they turn to ICT technicians for advice. However, more often than not, technical problems are only the tip of the iceberg, and a broader perspective is needed to understand and solve them. This programme teaches you the broad theoretical foundations you will need in order to understand the technological aspect of any ICT project that may come your way, looking beyond technological concerns when tackling ICT-related problems in practice. It builds on expertise in the field of information architecture, systems theory, and the quality and security of information systems.

The curriculum Information Sciences has been developed in close collaboration with the faculty of Management. The programme will teach you to become a digital architect who can look beyond mere technical sides to ICT adoption in designing competitive business solutions. In addition to developing a strong basis in systems approaches to information and management, students will specialise either as a Security or privacy officer, or in Alignment and IT.

  • Security or Privacy Officer
Expertise in privacy and, more generally, information security is highly sought after, in both government agencies and private enterprises, at all levels of management up to board level. Larger organisations already have a (Chief) Information Security Officer. The new EU Privacy legislation legally requires many to also have a Chief Privacy Officer (CPO). The (chief) information security officer and privacy officer are responsible for defining the information security strategy and privacy policies for an organisation and managing their implementation.

  • Alignment and IT
As a specialist in digital architecture and alignment, you will be able to communicate with a wide range of stakeholders with an aim to represent and incorporate the stakeholders' needs into a holistic view of the organization's strategy, processes, information needs and systems. Based on (your analysis of) the information obtained from these various stakeholders and on your technical assessment and evaluation of priorities, you can design an architecture that provides competitive business solutions and supports the most efficient and secure IT environment to meet a company's business needs.

In addition to one of the two tracks above, electives enable you to fine-tune the focus of this track to meet your own academic and professional interests.

This programme is suited for both students with a technological background with management ambitions, as those with a management background and a strong affinity with technology wanting to specialise in ICT.
