Programme of Particle and Astrophysics

Dear student,

We are working on solutions for hybrid education that will take place online and on campus. Therefore the instructional modes, number of exams, the form of the exams and/or assignments may change. You will be informed through Brightspace in case of changes. The course information in the Course guide provides an indication of what you can expect in the course.

In the case of not being able to attend one or more practical courses/lab days due to corona measures, the course coordinator will decide if the student is obligated to re-take the missed meeting and how this will take place.

The master specialisation Particle and Astrophysics consists of

A. Mandatory courses - Physics and Astronomy, Particle and Astrophysics 18 EC
B. Elective courses - Physics and Astronomy 24 EC
C. Master Thesis Physics and Astronomy 60 EC
D. Professional Preparation 1 EC
E. Philosophy 3 EC
F. Free electives 14 EC

Note: In order to create a coherent programme that prepares you for a Master's thesis contact the coordinator of your field of interest with the first few weeks of enrollment:

High Energy Physics: Dr S. Caron
Astrophysics: Dr O. Pols

A. Mandatory courses - Physics and Astronomy, Particle and Astrophysics (18 EC)

B. Elective courses - Physics and Astronomy (24 EC)

Elective courses should be chosen in consultation with the prospective supervisor or the coordinator of the master specialisation. Note that the selected electives should add up to a minimum total of 24 EC.

Depending on your field of interest, the following courses are highly recommended:

Legend:
Experimental High Energy Physics: EHEP
Theoretical High Energy Physics: THEP
Quantum Gravity: QG

* This course can be taken on request in the first and second semester. Contact the lecturer before the start of the academic year to make arrangements.

All Particle and Astrophysics elective courses are found here. However, you are not restricted to this selection of Physics and Astronomy courses. Part of your elective course programme (9-15 EC) can take the form of a synergy track in Computational and Data Science. Furthermore, this specialisation offers a synergy track Gravity+ which combines theoretical physics, astrophysics and mathematical physics.

The Educational tour can also be used as an elective course within your Master's.

C. Master Thesis Physics and Astronomy (60 EC)

D. Professional Preparation (1 EC)

E. Philosophy course (3 EC)

F. Free electives (14 EC)

Free electives can be chosen from other master specialisations or programmes, not necessarily within Physics and Astronomy. You can also consider courses from the societal specialisations.
