* The Internship is an optional element of the programme. Instead, you can choose a combination of elective courses, with a total workload of 10 ec (see options for elective courses below). N.B. If you choose not to do the Internship but electives instead, make sure you let the programme supervisor know. The workload for the internship is greatest in period 2, when the internship itself actually takes place; in period 1 students prepare for the internship on the basis of a number of meetings and assignments. The EC totals per period at the bottom of the table take this workload distribution into account.

** You should choose at least one elective (at least 5 ec, level: Master): this is an obligatory element of your degree programme.

There are four options:

  1. Electives in our department (Communication and Information Studies or CIS).

If you follow the GC&D track, you can opt for the following courses:
- CIWM414 Communicatie, gedrag en beïnvloeding (Dutch-taught)
- CIWM434 Crisis and Reputation Management (English-taught)
- CIWM475 Crisis- en Reputatiemanagement (Dutch-taught)
- CIWM471 New Media and Society (English—taught or Dutch-taught, depending on participants)
- CIWM473 Strategische Storytelling (Dutch-taught)
- CIWM474 Communicatie in Professionele Contexten (Dutch-taught)
- CIWM476 Kwalitatieve Methoden (Dutch-taught)
- CIWM477 Health and Illness (English-taught)
- CIWM478 Techniek en Toekomst van Gezondheid en Zorg (Dutch-taught)

You can register for these courses in Osiris. If you have any questions about course registration, contact the Student Information Point (STIP).

  1. Electives in another Arts Faculty department at RU:
You can take an elective offered elsewhere within the Arts Faculty. Most master programmes offer electives that CIS students can follow under all conditions. Others may require you to fulfill certain prerequisites. Whether a course can be followed as an elective (with or without prerequisites) is usually mentioned in the online course description of the course (see the online course guides). If it is unclear whether a course is open to you, check with the Examination Board of the programme that offers the course whether you can take part. You can register for elective course(s) that are open to you in Osiris. If you have any questions about course registration, contact the Student Information Point (STIP) of the faculty that offers the course.
  2. Electives in the department of Communication Studies (Faculty of Social Sciences) at RU:
If you follow any of the two CIS master tracks (C&B or GC&D), you can opt for electives offered by the department of Communication Studies at the Faculty of Social Sciences:

To see what courses are on offer, consult the online course guides of the different faculties and universities. Always ask the Examination Board of the department that offers the course (or the lecturer that teaches the course) for permission to take the course. Once you have approval to take part, you can register for the course(s) in Osiris. If you have any questions about course registration, contact the STIP of the faculty where you want to follow a course.

  • they cannot overlap (in terms of content) with other courses in your degree programme;
  • they must be courses offered at master level.
