General information
The History Department offers three Master’s programmes, one of which is taught in English (Ancient and Medieval Mediterranean Worlds). All these programmes and specialisations are driven by the research conducted by our staff.
Ancient and Medieval Mediterranean Worlds
This MA programme takes the Mediterranean as an especially illuminating starting point to explore wider questions in ancient and medieval Mediterranean history, including the transformation of the ancient to medieval world. This specialization focuses on the politics and culture of the Roman Empire, Byzantium, early Islam, and the Western Middle Ages and their historical impact on the present. Taught by a group of specialists who are internationally renowned in their fields of expertise, the programme will offer you a broad treatment of the major questions in Mediterranean history. With its combination of ancient and medieval history and focus on the Mediterranean world – including Byzantium and the world of Islam – Ancient and Medieval Mediterranean Worlds offers a unique programme in the Netherlands.
Geschiedenis en Actualiteit (Modern and Contemporary History)
In this MA programme, students explore the tension between history and current events; how the present context affects our interpretation of the past, and how history is used and abused to shape our future.
Politiek en Parlement (Politics and Parliament)
In this MA programme, students explore the field of politics and parliament as an institute from a multidisciplinary perspective, combining political history, political science and constitutional law.
