Admission and enrollment
Prior qualifications
Prospective students who wish to enroll should make sure that they meet the following requirements:
- You have a Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline, such as Communication Studies, Linguistics, or in a modern language. Students with a Bachelor's degree in a different subject may also apply, but we strongly recommend that you ask us for advice first.
- You have obtained an average score of 7.5 (out of 10) in the 2nd and 3rd year of a Dutch Bachelor's programme, or equivalent scores in a non-Dutch system. Your Bachelor's thesis should score at least 8 (out of 10).
- You are sufficiently talented for scientific research, as demonstrated in your Bachelor's thesis or in a dedicated research proposal.
- You are proficient in English.
International students who are not native speakers of English need to pass the TOEFL test, with a score of at least 600 for the paper-based version or 100 for the internet-based version. (If you can demonstrate an adequate level of English (e.g. as a result of an English-language education), a TOEFL test may not be necessary.)
All Dutch students except for those who have obtained a Bachelor's degree from an English-taught programme at a Dutch University are urgently advised to take an online placement test after their application has been approved; they will be informed about the time and place.
Enrollment
The programme starts each year around the first week of September. Our university has set a deadline for enrollment in Master's programmes that are taught in English. Please see here for information on deadlines.
Non-EU/EEA citizens need to submit a complete application before March 1st if they wish to be considered for the Radboud Scholarship programme. Non-EU/EEA citizens who submit a complete application before April 1st will be guaranteed accommodation, support with visa and residence permit.
For Master's students from one of the EU/EEA countries including the Netherlands, this deadline is May 1st. Applications after this date (but before July 1st), will still be taken into consideration but it may take longer to process them.
The Research Master’s programme Linguistics and Communication Sciences is a selective programme. All prospective students must apply for enrollment. The Admissions Committee, appointed by the Examination Board of the programme, decides about the admission of individual students.
When students from outside the Netherlands apply, or students with a different diploma, the Admissions Committee will assess whether the programme completed by the student is comparable to a relevant Bachelor's (or Master's) programme in the Netherlands.
Seeking admission: Documents
Before you proceed with the registration, the admissions committee would like to receive the following documents:
- A letter of motivation (max. 500 words)
- Certified copies of your university and pre-university diplomas (plus English transcripts)
- One of the following: Your Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) or Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE), or your TOEFL or IELTS English-language test results. The score must be at least 600 for the paper-based version or 100 for the internet-based version. For the IELTS test the score should at least be 7.0. For more extensive information: Check the website https://www.ets.org/toefl/ or https://www.ielts.org/.
- A copy of your passport

For students with an international previous education the application procedure consists of two steps:
- Create a request for enrolment in Studielink
- Upload your documents in the OSIRIS application
Students with a Dutch previous education can send all documents to: toelatingscommissie@let.ru.nl
Once we have received all documents required, we will first determine whether you meet the university's general requirements. Next, the admissions committee will consider the application and the documents provided with it. Prospective students may be asked for an interview (in person or online) with the admissions committee. The admissions committee will arrive at a decision which candidates will be informed of within 14 work days after the application deadline. Note that the admissions committee may require candidates to meet further conditions (e.g. requiring that a student take the course Introduction in R (LET-REMA-LC2301) in period 1 to make up for a deficiency as regards statistical knowledge).
