The making of the Human

Period: Semester 1, period 1 and 2

The modern ideal of self-determination and autonomy seems to be committed to the presupposition that human nature can be made or manipulated in accordance with the individual’s will. Does this ideal make sense or does it rather exemplify a self-delusion at the heart of modern society? In order to address this question, we want to interrogate the making of the human in a passive and an active sense: what does it mean for human self-understanding and human freedom that humans are made by forces and powers acting on them and that humans are actively making and shaping themselves and their world? More precisely, in this minor we interrogate the making of the human by discussing (1) the drives and forces that make humans, (2) the biopower that reshapes the human, and (3) the human capacity to create.
