Content

Is there a crisis of society? Is our social fabric still intact? Perennial questions such as these are once again taking center stage because of two contemporary trends.

First, societies are becoming increasingly sensitive to the differences that exist between the various individuals and groups within them. Some would even add that this coincides with an historically unprecedented proliferation of individual and collective identities on offer.

Second, it seems as if relations between these individuals and groups are becoming increasingly polarized. Or at the very least, many people interpret their social environment in terms of growing disagreement, mounting threats, and escalating tensions.

In light of these phenomena, this module undertakes a philosophical investigation of the complex relations between individuals and their societies.
