Admission requirements and regulations for exemptions
As of September 2020 the master's programmes in Chemistry, Molecular Life Sciences, and Science are replaced by a single master's programme Molecular Sciences.
Students who started before August 2020 in one of the old programmes had the chance to graduate in that programme until August 31st 2023. After Sept 1 2023 they can enroll in the programme Molecular Sciences. Their courses and internships will be valid as a part of the new programme also.
Admission requirements for students with a Dutch university Bachelor’s degree
In order to get admission to the Master’s programme Molecular Sciences, you need a completed Bachelor’s degree in one of the following fields of science:
- Chemistry
- Molecular Life Sciences (specialisations Chemistry of Life and Medicinal Chemistry)
- Science
- A related programme in Molecular Sciences or Chemical Technology
The Admissions Office will consider whether or not students have met the requirements that apply for admission to the Master's programme of their choice.
Admission requirements for students with a Bachelor’s degree from a Dutch University College or University of Applied Sciences (HBO)
In order to get admission to this Master’s programme, you need a completed Bachelor’s degree of a University College with a major in Science or Chemistry or a related programme, or a Bachelor's degree of a University of Applied Sciences (HBO) in Chemistry or a related programme, in combination with a completed minor or pre-Master’s programme of 30-45 EC. The pre-master is based on your particular Bachelor's programme. If the required pre-master's programme would exceed 50-60 EC you will generally not be admitted.
The Admissions Office will consider whether or not students have met the requirements that apply for admission to the Master's programme in Molecular Sciences.
Admission requirements for students with a foreign Bachelor’s degree
Entering the Master’s programme in Molecular Sciences requires a Bachelor’s degree in:
- Chemistry, a related programme in Molecular Sciences or Physics from any (European) University, or;
- Molecular Sciences or Physics from any University
The Admissions Office will determine if an international student has the required knowledge to be admitted. The Admissions Office will also indicate if the student is required to follow specific courses from the Bachelor's programme to eliminate possible deficiencies.
- A proficiency in English
In order to take part in this programme, you need to have fluency in both written and spoken English. Non-native speakers of English* without a Dutch Bachelor's degree or VWO diploma need one of the following:- A TOEFL score of >575 (paper based) or >232 (computer based) or >90 (internet based)
- An IELTS score of >6.5
- Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) or Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) with a mark of C or higher
Regulations concerning exemptions
If you believe that you already master the material of one or more of the courses you may apply for (an) exemption(s) at the Admissions Office. Based on your academic record they will then decide whether or not to grant the exemption(s). Whatever the outcome, your degree will have to contain 120 EC of new courses, meaning that you will have to do another course to make up for the exempted EC.
