May 27, 2013 Dimitris' paper "A sequential sampling framework for spectral k-means based on efficient bootstrap accuracy estimations: application to distributed clustering", published at ACM TKDD 2012, was selected as one of the best papers of the year by Computing Reviews.
May 6, 2013 The papers "Cyclic Causal Discovery from Continuous Equilibrium Data" (Joris and Tom) and "Learning Sparse Causal Models is not NP-hard"(TomC, Joris, and Tom), got accepted as oral presentations at the UAI 2013 conference, with the paper "From Ordinary Differential Equations to Structural Causal Models: the deterministic case" (Joris et al.) as another poster.

April 5, 2013 The SWELL project of Wessel, Suzan, Maya, and Saskia has received a COMMIT valorization award of 10.000 Euro.
April 4, 2013 The International Conference on Adaptive and Natural Computing algorithms, ICANNGA'13 opened with a keynote talk by Tom entitled Reading the Brain with Bayesian Machine Learning.
April 3, 2013 Elena Marchiori received the prestigious EvoStar award in Vienna. This award is presented annually to a scientist who has made exceptional contributions to the development of the field of evolutionary computing in Europe. Elena was celebrated both for her excellent scientific contributions and for her major organizational endeavors.
Feb. 1, 2013 The paper "Reliability and Validity of Query Intent Assessments" by Suzan, Max, Maya, Saskia, and Wessel, in cooperation with Maarten en Eduard, was accepted for publication in the Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology (JASIST).
Jan. 8, 2013 In cooperation with the Centre for Language Studies and the Centre for Language and Speech Technology we will organize the next annual BENELEARN conference on machine learning, to be held in Nijmegen on June 3rd, 2013.
Nov. 10, 2012 Twan and Elena's paper "Robust Community Detection Methods with Resolution Parameter for Complex Detection in Protein Protein Interaction Networks" received the Best Paper Award at the PRIB 2012 conference in Tokyo, Japan.
Nov.5, 2012 Max and Tom's paper "Bayesian inference of structural brain networks", together with Christian Beckmann and Marcel van Gerven, got accepted for publication in Neuroimage.
Oct. 15, 2012 Pavol Jancura successfully defended his thesis entitled "Evolutionary analysis in PPI networks and applications".
Sept. 15, 2012 Joris Mooij (PI), Tom Heskes and Barbara Franke (of the department of Human Genetics of the Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre) have been awarded a NWO Vrije Competitie grant for their proposal "More Confidence in Causal Discovery". The project aims to develop novel methods that output probabilistic measures on the confidence in inferred causal relations. Tom Claassen will start in January 2013 as postdoc on this project.
August, 2012 Daniel Kuehlwein and Josef Urban scored two second places and one third place in the theorem proving world championship held at the Turing100 conference. The competition prizes were sponsored by Google. Have a look in this video.
August 18, 2012 Tom & Tom received the best-paper award at UAI 2012, one of the premier conferences in artificial intelligence, for their paper "A Bayesian approach to constraint based causal inference". TomC will present the work right after Turing award winner Judea Pearl, the founding father of Bayesian networks and causal reasoning.

June 1, 2012 Perry Groot moved from MBSD to IS to work on the EU project TACTICS. Elena Sokolova will start as a PhD student on the same project in August.
May, 2012 The paper "Molecular Machines in the Synapse...", based upon a collaboration with the VU Center for Neurogenomics and Cognitive Researchers, with Evgeni Tsivtsivadze, Tjeerd Dijkstra, and Tom Heskes as co-authors appeared in PLoS Computional Biology (impact factor 5.515).
May, 2012 The EU Project OPTIMISTIC, a collaboration with the UMC Department of Neurology on studying myotonic dystrophy, got accepted. The Machine Learning group is involved to develop and apply techniques for finding biomarkers that best explain the quality of life of dystrophy patients and then may lead to new therapies.
Jan. 5, 2012 Together with Ole Jensen, Ali is organizing the “Data Analysis Competition” on decoding mental states and neuronal representations from brain imaging data for the 18th International Conference on Biomagnetism (Biomag, August 2012, Paris).

August 31, 2011 The papers "Causal Discovery with Cyclic Additive Noise Models" by Joris Mooij, Dominik Janzing, Bernhard Schölkopf and Tom Heskes, and "Learning sparse inverse covariance matrices in the presence of confounders" by Oliver Stegle, Christoph Lippert, Joris Mooij and Karsten M. Borgwardt were accepted for NIPS 2011.

March 22, 2011 Max has been awarded the Google Europe Scholarship for Students with Disabilities. This scholarship gives recognition to outstanding scientific contributions from students with disabilities. It includes an all-expenses-paid retreat at Google's Engineering Center in Zürich in June 2011.
