Neurorehabilitation

Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour

The neurorehabilitation research group conducts both translational and clinical studies with a focus on studies of motor control and functional recovery, particularly concerning balance and gait, upper extremity movements, speech-swallowing movements. In addition, chronic fatigue and social participation are important fields of interest.

Many of these studies make use of the available movement laboratories (Radboud Falls Simulator, Gait Lab, Upper Extremity Lab, Swallowing station) at the Department of Rehabilitation with unique and state-of-the-art equipment. The fact that these facilities are embedded in a clinical department allows almost immediate translation and application of knowledge into clinical practice.

The target populations involve adults and children with cerebral, spinal and neuromuscular diseases. The interaction between perception, cognition and motor control is a central theme to study compensatory next to true repair mechanisms as essential elements of neuroplasticity. Main goals are to unravel pathophysiological mechanisms underlying motor disabilities, fatigue and participation restrictions in neurological diseases and to develop and evaluate novel mechanism-based treatment options.
