With the support of Université Paris Sciences et Lettres (PSL) and Université Paris Cité, and the kind hosting by PariSanté Campus, this members-only event aims to discuss the opportunities and challenges we face in using artificial intelligence (AI) in our teaching and research activities based on the experiences of The Guild member universities. If Europe is to be a driver in AI, what stands in the way of universities helping to achieve this goal?
The fast-paced diffusion of AI systems in universities raises many questions, opening debates on how institutions and policymakers should react to reap the benefits of these technologies while preventing their potential adverse effects. Many universities have implemented institutional policies about using AI in teaching, learning, research, and research support activities, also trying to define what they consider responsible use. National governments and EU institutions are also aware of AI's high potential to increase research productivity, hence their need to find the most appropriate policy instruments to foster the uptake of AI in research. In contrast, institutional practices and policies are increasingly fragmented.
The event will showcase institutional practices for the responsible use of AI in higher education and research and provide a platform for mutual learning among our members. By highlighting practices that should be further scaled up, we will collectively identify challenges requiring a policy answer, fostering a rich learning environment.
