Art rebellion

In this think tank you’ll dive into the world of art as rebellion. We will examine how artistic experimentation can serve as a form of protest, how it reshapes collective imagination, and how creativity itself becomes an act of resistance. This will result in a public programma at Lux.

Art can take many forms: it can be beautiful or unsettling, political or personal, celebrated or contested. It can also be deeply rebellious. This ThinkTank explores the idea of art as rebellion — how creative expression pushes back against established powers, challenges norms, and reimagines possible new worlds. We will examine how artistic experimentation can serve as a form of protest, how it reshapes collective imagination, and how creativity itself becomes an act of resistance.

Artistic practices do more than decorate our world; they help us understand it anew. They can illuminate hidden systems, question authority, and respond to the social and ecological crises surrounding us. Through art, we can learn to think differently — to draw beyond the lines, to envision alternative futures, and perhaps to sketch the outline of a brighter, more just horizon.

    Client

The client for this ThinkTank is art house Lux, Nijmegen. Under the banner of Nimma aan Zee (Nimma by the Sea), LUX curates programs that place art at the heart of dialogue around climate change. These programs explore the issue through three lenses: indigenous perspectives, the voices of future generations, and the viewpoints of non-human entities.

    Assignment

The ThinkTank will culminate in a public programme at LUX — such as a conference, art installation, intervention, or short documentary — designed and produced by you. Students will have access to LUX’s facilities, professional expertise, and networks in art, culture, and production.

For the final project, you will define your specific focus within the broader theme, working in close dialogue with LUX and your academic supervisors. Together, you will investigate how art can rebel, inspire, and transform — and how creative acts can become catalysts for change.

    Kick-off weekend

The kick-off weekend of this think tank will take place on Friday 30 and Saturday 31 January 2026 in the Huissen Monastery. The kick-off weekend is a mandatory part of the think tank.

    Weekly meetings

After the kick-off, weekly meetings will take place on Tuesday evenings from 18:30-20:30. The supervisors are present every other week.

    Study trip

A study trip lasting up to three or four days is also part of this think tank. The dates and location will be determined in consultation with the group.
