Babybabbels: How to talk to babies

Wednesday 12 November 2025, 10 am - 12 pm

When babies are born, they have the potential to learn any language in the world. Which language (or languages) they end up speaking depends on what they hear around them. This is where we, as people in the baby’s life, come in. By talking to a baby, even if they are not talking back yet, we help them learn the sounds and meanings of words. This way, we support them in learning language themselves, with their first words usually appearing around their first birthday. But how do we best talk to a baby or young child?

If you are curious about the answer, come to our next BabyBabbels! During this informal session, Jule Hafermann will explain what babytalk (also infant- or child-directed speech) is, and why it might even help babies to learn their first language. You will also get practical tips on what to talk about with your baby, and we will discuss other simple ways to support early language development at home.
