Bachelor's Experience Day American Studies

Thursday 11 April 2024, 12:30 pm - 5 pm
Come study American Studies for a day and find out if the Bachelor’s suits you.

During a Bachelor’s Experience Day, you visit our campus for a day and follow a special program with other prospective students. This day will give you a good impression of the university and the Bachelor’s program. Moreover, it is the perfect opportunity to ask all your questions to students and staff.

Dr. Lindsay Janssen, The representation of gendered and minority identities in British and American young adult series.

What does it mean to be a second-generation Indian-American girl growing up in the US? How do the experiences of different secondary-school students in small-town England differ dependent on their upbringing, gender and sexual orientation, and/or background? How do representations of such categories align with contemporary issues? During this mini seminar, you will get a sneak preview into the course 'American and British Popular Culture' and the scholarly analysis of popular culture. We will look at British and American examples of films and series dealing with coming of age narratives such as Never Have I Ever (2020-23) and Sex Education (2019-2023) and will explore how these series represent different individual and communal identities and the interaction between such identity categories.

Dr. Chris Cusack, Zombie Nation

Why are zombies so popular, and what do they tell us about contemporary America? In this class, we will look at recent North American zombie fiction. On the surface level, these novels may appear to be about a craving for braaaains, but as we will see zombies actually tell us a lot about important issues in American society, such as racism, immigration, and the economy.

The programme of this Bachelor's Experience Day is combined with English Language and Culture.
