Climate Change Engagement of Scientists

Thursday 19 March 2026, 4 am - 5 am
Going Beyond Research

As climate and ecological breakdown intensifies, a growing number of scientists are moving beyond traditional academic roles into advocacy and activism. This increased visibility has sparked debate about the consequences of such engagement for society’s response to these crises, for public trust in science, and for the scientists themselves. In this talk, you will listen to Fabian Dablander who will draw on recent research, including a survey of over 9,000 scientists from 115 countries, to examine how and why scientists engage with climate change, what forms this engagement takes, and its impacts. He will also share his own experiences at the interface of science and advocacy, and highlight examples of successful and unsuccessful climate campaigns.

This talk is an invitation to reflect on your collective role as scientists in a time of escalating planetary and societal crises.

About the speaker

Speaker Fabian Dablander

Fabian Dablander is a postdoctoral researcher at SEVEN, the interdisciplinary climate institute of the University of Amsterdam. His research lies at the intersection of behavioural science, sustainability, and statistics. Previously, he was based at the Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics and the Institute for Advanced Study at the University of Amsterdam. He completed his PhD in the Department of Psychological Methods, where he worked on Bayesian hypothesis testing, causal inference from observational data, and early warning signals of tipping points. Fabian co-founded the data science for social good organisation CorrelAid Netherlands, helped establish Scientist Rebellion in the Netherlands, and co-organises the annual Amsterdam Complexity School on Climate Change.
