This presentation will address Diana’s PhD research proposal, which examines how Ukrainian migrants experience, navigate, and give meaning to law and state institutions across borders. Focusing on Poland and the Netherlands, the research explores which encounters with law and state institutions are of particular importance in shaping migrants’ legal consciousness and what differences can be observed between the two national contexts. Beyond analysing migrants’ perceptions, the research also examines how these experiences relate to their willingness to involve or avoid state institutions in resolving everyday problems, exploring when, how, and why such decisions are made. Ultimately, it seeks to provide new insights into migrants’ experiences with law and the state, and to explain how this shapes their trust, or lack of trust, in legal and institutional systems.
