Contents of the course
Coaching individual students or small groups requires different skills from teachers than the ones you use in traditional education. During this course, we will focus on coaching skills that could be relevant for teachers within the PPD learning path. You will learn how to work effectively with students on the challenges they face and guide them toward (their own) solutions. The course will cover practical coaching tools, how to structure your coaching sessions and how to decide when a referral is necessary.
During this course:
- You will learn to recognize basic principles of coaching and use these in individual coaching conversations with students.
- You will learn to create a safe learning environment and explain your role as a coach to your coachees (students), identify boundaries to this role and refer if necessary.
- You will learn to structure your coaching conversations by using conversation models in terms of the process and the content of the conversation.
- You will reflect on your own professional development as a coach and demonstrate a lifelong learning attitude towards the coachee (student).
Target audience
This course is designed specifically for teachers who interact with students in a coaching manner. This role can be found when teaching in a personal and professional development (PPD) course or as a mentor, for example. Ideally you attend this course before the start of your coaching tasks.
