Wetlands are important habitats that host a wide diversity of plant, animal and microbial species, and provide numerous ecosystem services. They play an important role in carbon sequestration and water purification, due to their tight aquatic-terrestrial coupling. However, these ecosystems are severely threatened by anthropogenic impacts such as habitat loss, pollution, drought, and acidification.
