We strive to make learning paths more flexible and to tailor education more to the individual student. In doing so, we want to explicitly connect to the intrinsic motivation and personal drives of students. Moreover, the freedom to make their own choices helps them actually grow in academic and professional independence. However, the learning needs of students can be at odds with education offered in long learning lines with set goals and attainment targets. There may also be specific requirements from the professional field that leaves little room for freedom of choice. Freedom and flexibility therefore have limits. Where exactly are these limits? How do we prevent freedom from becoming non-committal? And what does all this require from teachers?
