Van wetenschap naar publiek
Van wetenschap naar publiek

From science to society

A full house at De Vereniging, on tour with theatre lectures and long queues in front of the signing table: some academics really do it. Why do some people voluntarily spend an evening listening to these researchers? And what can you learn from these academic stage performers?

Please note: this module is taught in Dutch.

In this course, you will walk through the steps towards an engaging public lecture together with two programme directors from Radboud Reflects. You will learn to think from the audience’s perspective and write a press release that would fill a room, and you will practice a mini-lecture for a wider audience yourself.

In this course, you will learn:

    • how to devise an engaging programme for the public
    • how to write a catchy press release for a programme
    • how to present scientific insights to a broader audience
    • how to combine accessibility and depth
    • how to align style and content

Pam Tönissen and Bas van Woerkom-Rooker are programme directors at the Nijmegen-based public lecture organisation Radboud Reflects. They put scientists on a stage, from major international names to young PhD candidates, and interview them. This way, the programme directors explore the deeper questions behind scientific research and translate these for a wide audience.

The course comprises four sessions held on Tuesday evenings from 6.30 pm to 8.30 pm.

The course will be held on campus. The Radboud Honours Academy believes that learning happens best when we work together in the same workspace, so your physical presence is required! If you know that you cannot attend one or more sessions, choose another course so that you and your fellow students can make the most of this experience.
