Huygens Colloquium: Wilco Verberk

Monday 5 October 2026, 12:30 pm - 1:15 pm
Oxygen, the molecule that shaped animal life on Earth

In this talk aquatic ecologist, Wilco Verberk takes you on a journey of life on Earth, from giant insects in the Carboniferous to extant polar giants. He talks about free molecular oxygen, essentially a waste product that started to accumulate in our atmosphere during the great oxidation event some 2.4 Billion years ago, and which subsequently became essential to fuel the energy metabolism of virtually all animal life seen today.

Wilco will present how aquatic animal life has special adaptations and how an oxygen perspective can help understand the responses of aquatic life to current changes in our climate.

Huygens Colloquia

In the Faculty of Science, a great diversity of exciting research is going on. The Huygens Colloquia are a colloquium series by Faculty of Science employees for all faculty employees and students. Every month, a colleague will discuss their science and their latest results in an accessible way to a wider audience. Access is free and no registration is needed.
