Extreme operating environments, whether in the subsea, or other industrial settings, push materials to their limits. How do we design materials that not only survive but thrive under these conditions? In this talk, I will share insights from my work and industry experience (Tata Steel, Materials Innovation institute and Shell), focusing on how composition, processing, and real-world use shape material performance. The harsher the environment, the greater the demand for innovation whether it is corrosion-resistant coatings for subsea infrastructure or high-strength alloys for deep water. innovation does not happen in isolation. The most impactful solutions emerge when researchers and industry experts collaborate from the outset, aligning scientific discovery with practical needs. Together, we can transform breakthroughs into cost-effective, durable, and sustainable materials that meet the toughest operational demands.
