If you survey participants in a study, have people fill in questionnaires on the street as part of fieldwork, speak to a fellow scientist on a stage or make a podcast about your field, these are all forms of interviewing. In this interviewing module, you will learn how best to do that.

Please note: this module is taught in Dutch.

How do you get people to open up to share certain things, for example? Which ethical and moral dilemmas does interviewing involve? For example, can you pay participants for their contributions? What are the recognised pitfalls? How do you formulate an interview, and how do you choose the right format? How do you embed interviews in your research, and how do you translate research questions into good interview questions?

In this interviewing module, we will cover the different methods and interviewing formats, useful techniques, ethics and applications within your own field, among other topics. We will also zoom in on how to formulate an interview and the different formats it may take (text, sound, images), with a special focus on podcasting. We will also learn to apply this in practice by holding and discussing an interview on a topic of your own choice (where possible, this could certainly also be something you can use in one of your subjects/courses).

The training sessions will be given by journalist and philosopher Anita van Rootselaar. Anita studied Liberal Arts & Sciences (majoring in Philosophy) in Utrecht and completed a Research Master's degree in Political Philosophy in Nijmegen. After graduating, she started working as a freelance journalist, focusing on politics and science. She writes for the AD, among other platforms. She recently worked for Radboud DemLab in Lebanon on a documentary about democracy during the elections there. She also makes podcast series, including for the anti-polarisation platform ZOZ, and gives debate lessons to primary school students.

The course consists of 4 session which will take place on Thursday evenings 18.30 - 21.00 hrs.

The Honours Academy and Radboud in’to Languages believe that the best learning happens when we collaborate in the same workspace, so your physical presence is required! If you know that you cannot attend one or more sessions, pick a different course so you can get the most out of this experience with your fellow students.
