Is success a matter of luck?

Friday 12 May 2023, 3:30 pm - 5 pm

In recent books, Joris Luyendijk (The 7 ticks) and Huub Buijssen (Why success is a matter of luck) have pointed to the critical role of chance and often unfairly distributed circumstances as determinants of social, scientific, business, sporting, and other success. Coincidence expert Klaas Landsman will discuss this with the latter and with the audience, preceded by short introductions by Buijssen and himself. In the process, Landsman (with all seven checkmarks in his pocket) will defend the seemingly paradoxical position of Beethoven, who once said to a noble friend of his: What you are, you are by chance and birth. What I am, I am by myself.
