Learn and teach creatively about climate change

Currently, there are big problems both nationally and globally which are complex and volatile, one of the most important ones being climate change. It requires an interdisciplinary approach with different perspectives on possible solutions, such as cultural, economic, social, psychological and environmental. In this honours lab, you will develop an education program for teenagers about climate change and farms.

    For whom?

This Honours Lab is for BA2, BA3, pre-Master’s students.

What are you going to do?

A small farm in the Netherlands is trying to make a difference. They want to educate about sustainability, bridge the gap between city and farmland, and be inspired themselves to make even more changes for the better. And they want you to help them.

In this Honourslab, you will develop an education program for teenagers about climate change and farms. The goal is for the program to be creative, inspiring and a lived experience, using the farmland and landscape around it.

To develop the program you will have regular meeting with teachers in training, the client and your guides. In the meetings, we will use creative processes and the design thinking cycle as means to develop the education program. Moreover, you will be paired with a teacher in training. This way, you can gain experience in secondary education, which you can use to further develop the education program. There will be time for your personal development through guest lectures and reflective moments.

Students from all faculties are welcome, because we need an interdisciplinary team.

    What’s in it for you?

In this lab, you will have the opportunity to engage in education activities such as lesson design and teaching. Moreover, you will work for a client with experience in NGO contexts. You may learn/develop:

    • Complexity thinking
    • Creative processes
    • Didactics

The program consists of 5 meetings, short field trips, and a closing symposium. We will start on 8 April and the closing symposium is on 3 June. The meetings take place at the university. There will be three field trips: 1) to the farm in Brabant, 2) to a school in Nijmegen, 3) to the school of the teacher in training you are teamed up with.

    Field trip 1

A kick-off at the dairy farm which is located in Brabant. You will visit the farm and its environment, hear about life on the farm and their main challenges.

    Meeting 1-4

These meetings will consist of two parts. The first part will be a guest lecture and the second part will be time to work with your team. The guest lectures will be about topics such as climate change, teaching, creative thinking and neuroscience.

    Field trips 2 and 3

These field trips are approximately a half day (including travel time) and involve visits to the secondary schools. They will be scheduled in consultation with the group. During the visits you can talk with the teenagers and observe lessons. And if you want: you can teach part of a lesson, to test part of the lesson program that you developed with teenagers at this school.

    Meeting 5

During this meeting you will have time with your team to work on the lesson program and presentation. The course coordinators will also be present to give support.

    Symposium

We will close off with a symposium where you will present your education program to the client and their network. Here, you will meet teachers, people involved in NGO’s, as well as companies that deal with (sustainable) food supply.

    Study load

Approximately 5 hours per week (meetings and self-study).
