MDT: Give something back to society

The organisation

Eikenhorst is a small-scale residential location for elderly individuals with somatic conditions or dementia. The complex is situated in a beautiful, forest area between Nijmegen and Groesbeek. Together with care professionals and volunteers, a comfortable home is created for the elderly residents.

What will you do? 

You can choose from three different social activities to assist with. The right match will be made in consultation with you. Ideally, you would participate in the same activity each week so that the elderly residents can get to know a familiar face. 

The residents are either living with dementia or have physical limitations due to somatic conditions. Therefore, additional support and attention during the activities is highly appreciated. Besides your regular activity, it is also possible to engage in one-on-one activities with the residents, such as taking a walk or going for a bike ride.

Together with other volunteers and a welfare worker, you will help ensure that this activity runs smoothly and create an enjoyable afternoon for the residents. You will assist in bringing the residents to the event, help them during Bingo, and contribute to a pleasant atmosphere. You can help on Monday mornings, Monday afternoons, or Wednesday afternoons.

Every Thursday afternoon, the activity "Movement to Music" is on the agenda. In a large circle, the elderly move to music while mostly seated. Many of the exercises require one-on-one assistance. To enable as many residents as possible to participate, a large number of assistants is needed. If you enjoy helping the elderly become more active, your help is more than welcome!

Every Tuesday afternoon, creative activities take place. Often, something is crafted and sometimes a treat is baked. The activity takes place in the living room or on the department's terrace. You will help to organize and carry out the activity, primarily ensuring a cozy atmosphere and offering a listening ear. Together with other volunteers, you will contribute to a pleasant afternoon for the residents.

The organisation

Stichting Cap is an organisation with care horse farms in and around Nijmegen. Specialist supervisors work here with respect and attention to provide a safe workplace for people with (severe) physical and/or intellectual disabilities. At one of the horse farms, a group of about six clients help daily grooming the horses and maintaining the pens. This gives the clients opportunities to discover their potential and expand their boundaries. The farm is located in a beautifully green and quiet area just outside Nijmegen.

What will you do? 

'Doing things together' is the credo. Together with a care professional, you will accompany the clients in their activities and make sure the clients have a good day.

• You support clients in activities they perform independently, such as taking care of the horses and the care on and around the grounds;
• You explain and encourage their activities;
• You show interest, give attention and make sure the clients feel safe and comfortable and have an enjoyable working day;
• You also roll up your own sleeves to tackle physical chores.

The organisation

Nederlands de Baas is a school for integration and language. The participants are mostly status holders, but there are also foreign students, for example. The level is very diverse; from illiterate to advanced.

The school is an initiative of Margriet van Baasbank (former Cultural Anthropology student) with the main reason to offer personal adaptation and flexibility for the course participants. The classes are in small groups. This allows space to give attention to the personal learning process of all course participants.

What will you do? 

As a class assistant, you help the NT2 teachers with the language and integration lessons, for example by working with smaller groups. In this way you help course participants improve their level of speaking and/or get rid of their fear of speaking. 

Would you rather go out and about? Then you can also work as a workshop facilitator. During the workshops you will go outside together with the course participants. Of course, the best way to integrate and/or learn a language is in practice. For example, figure out together how public transport works, or what's for sale at the market. Or organize a bike ride through the city. You learn the most by doing!

Depending on your preference, you can do one of the two activities or a combination of both.

The organisation

Meneer Vos is a small-scale lunch café on the grounds of the Winkelsteegh where young people with intellectual disabilities work. They can take on roles in both the kitchen and service, and they do so with a fair amount of independence.

Throughout all tasks, the employees receive intensive guidance from professionals in the fields of horeca and care. Hospitality is the top priority for this enthusiastic team!

What will you do? 

You support the young people in their work in the kitchen and in the service:

• You are on standby to help employees.
• You stimulate the clients and show interest in them.
• You ensure that they feel safe and have a pleasant working day.

The organisation

Joachim and Anna is an expertise center for elderly people with dementia, part of the care institution De Waalboog. They have a unique intake-, transfer- and observation unit with two small-scale residential groups in a green environment, called De Brink. This is a first location where people with early dementia can go when they can no longer live at home. At the Brink they are offered day structure and activities, and here a picture of the dementia and their behavior is formed. 

What will you do? 

Individual attention is important for the elderly, and this is the great added value of your role. You will be paired with someone in the residential group, whom you will be able to get to know better. Together you can, for example, cook and eat, listen to music, take a walk or play a game. Around the holidays joint activities will be organized.

Preferably you will be linked with the elderly in pairs, so that you can do activities together and share your experiences.

GVO de Klup is a volunteer organization that organizes various leisure activities for people with mild intellectual disabilities. There are weekly activities such as cooking, a creative soos and bowling, but also occasional trips to a concert for example. 

The participants generally have difficulties with learning, and there is no age limit - from young to old are welcome. There are mixed groups, as well as special activities that cater to young people.

What will you do? 

You will support at the creative soos on Tuesday evenings, for adults with a mild intellectual disability. This is a free creative and game night. Participants can do (handi)crafts, but also play puzzles, pool or table football for example. As a facilitator, you help where necessary, participate in the activities yourself, and contribute to the participants having a pleasant evening.

• You have an overview of what is needed in an activity.
• You contribute positively to the consultation between the young people. 
• You help to give the youngsters an enjoyable afternoon.

The organisation

ElanArt is committed to (young) newcomers. They organize artistic activities at various asylum centers in and around Nijmegen with the aim of bringing the young people closer to Dutch society. This way they can develop themselves and meet other young people, while waiting in uncertainty for a residence permit.

What will you do? 

Four times a week ElanArt organizes creative activities for young newcomers between the ages of 18 and 25, around music, theater or visual arts for example. You will help at one of these workshops on a weekly basis as a supporter. You make contact with the young people and make sure they have an enjoyable and relaxing time.

The organisation

ElanArt is committed to (young) newcomers. They organize artistic activities at various asylum centers in and around Nijmegen with the aim of bringing the young people closer to Dutch society. This way they can develop themselves and meet other young people, while waiting in uncertainty for a residence permit.

What will you do? 

You will organize a fun activity or day trip for the youth of the asylum center, where you independently make and execute your plan. For this job, it is possible to sign up as a group and do this assignment together. 

You first join a few times with the creative workshops of ElanArt. This way you get to know the target group, discover what their needs are and what they like. Then you start working on your own plan. You also arrange the financing for the activity and all practical matters. You conclude the project with a fantastic day together with the young people, which you have realized yourself!
