The Classical Canon Goes Public: Taking Your Research Beyond Academia
Ever wondered how to meaningfully discuss your research on centuries-old material in a two-minute video? Do you believe academic events should attract the same crowds as Tomorrowland and Oktoberfest? Are you curious about how museums use classical antiquity to inform and engage contemporary audiences?
From 18 to 21 May 2026, MECANO, an EU-funded MSCA doctoral network dedicated to advancing our understanding of the mechanics of canon formation and knowledge transmission of ancient Greek and Latin texts, will hold its second annual Spring School in Nijmegen (NL). This year’s edition will focus on science communication.
Programme overview
After a general introduction featuring lectures by specialists on applied history, classics in the classroom and critical fabulation, attendees will gain hands-on experience with impactful and innovative research dissemination and valorisation methods by participating in one of the following multi-day workshops:
- Producing short videos with the support of the Radboud Educational Design and Technology Team, drawing on materials from the Radboud Special Collections;
- Creating a transhistorical exhibition on classical canons in collaboration with the Valkhof Museum (Nijmegen);
- Curating and contributing to the design of MECANO’s closing festival - including artistic performances, movie screenings, and a conference -, together with STUK’s House for dance, image and sound (Leuven, BE).
