Open Science and Open Education are, at their core, closely related movements: both aim to increase the accessibility, transparency and societal impact of knowledge. Yet in practice, they have often developed separately, with their own networks, infrastructures, incentives and policy frameworks. This historical separation has led to a certain degree of compartmentalisation, meaning that opportunities to link education and research in terms of content and organisation are still not being fully exploited.
It is precisely by viewing these developments in a more interconnected way that opportunities arise for mutual reinforcement. Open educational resources can benefit directly from research findings and data, whilst teaching practices help researchers to better translate their work into social and educational impact. Furthermore, the growing focus on recognition and appreciation provides an important starting point for incorporating open contributions in a visible and meaningful way into the career paths of both teachers and researchers.
During this meeting
In this session, we will explore how this divide came about historically, what is currently happening in higher education regarding open, and where the greatest opportunities for collaboration lie. We will focus on themes such as shared infrastructures, open knowledge practices, professional development, and new ways of recognising the value of open work.
The key question is how we can ‘connect’ Open Science and Open Education into a single, cohesive ecosystem in which education and research reinforce one another structurally, rather than existing in parallel.
