mRNA Vaccins

Monday 27 May 2024, 8 pm - 10 pm
Nieuwe ontwikkelingen en toepassingen na covid

Ever wondered why there is such a big interest in such a tiny piece of genetic code? Although the concept of mRNA vaccines dates back to 1995, it was only during the pandemic that mRNA therapeutics entered our everyday life and started revolutionizing vaccine development. mRNA vaccines teach your body to defend itself by mimicking the natural infection process, without the risks of an actual infection. From cancer therapy to personalized medicine, mRNA holds potential for broad application, and the field of mRNA technology is advancing fast …

On Monday, 27th of May, Gorben Pijlman (WUR) and Johannes Textor (RU) will bring you up to speed on the wondrous world of mRNA technology. Gorben Pijlman heads the Arbovirus research group. This group combines fundamental virology and applied vaccine development using live mosquitoes and pathogenic viruses. Gorben will introduce you to the field of mRNA vaccines and the new technology of self-amplifying mRNAs. Johannes Textor's Computational Immunology group designs artificial immune systems using machine learning and investigates how the immune system perceives 'abnormal' information coming from pathogens or tumors. Johannes will explain how immunotherapies against cancer and new mRNA vaccines are developed in this way. Groundbreaking science, jazz from Trio In Dubio and the usual fun - last time before the summer in the Science Café!
