The information processing in the supragranular layers is mediated by the integrationofbottom-up (i.e current state of the world) and top-down information, created elsewhere inthebrain,which is primarily regulated by neuromodulatory neurotransmitters. This thesis arguethatmonoaminergic neuromodulatory neurotransmitters control intracellular information transfer inacelltype specific manner by controlling action potential threshold. We further provide experimentalevidence that the top-down neuromodulatory drive and bottom-up propagation of sensoryinformationform closed-loop control systems to control neural representation in the somatosensorycortex.Targeted manipulation of these neuromodulatory circuits might one day help to control sensoryprocessing in health and disease.
