NIG PhD course ‘Current themes in EU governance

Monday 10 June 2024, 9 am - Thursday 13 June 2024, 5 pm

Are you doing PhD research on European integration?  Then you are welcome to attend the PhD course ‘Current themes in EU governance’ offered by the Netherlands Institute of Governance, at the green campus of Radboud University, Nijmegen.

The course focuses on core themes in European integration against the backdrop of increasing politicization. It provides participants with an in-depth understanding of EU contestation and politicization, integration, decision making, compliance and enforcement, the functioning of the European administrative space, and the role of national executives/parliaments in EU decision making.

It also supports students in formulating their own research questions and positioning themselves in EU studies as a discipline. Participants will also explore the nexus between academic research and practice and have ample opportunity to discuss their research projects with peers and renowned experts.

The course is taught by a team of renowned EU experts:

  • Prof. dr. Peter Bursens (Antwerp University): Domestic coordination under pressure: the role of national executives and parliaments in EU decision making
  • Prof. dr. Markus Haverland (Erasmus University Rotterdam): European integration: an answer to pressing societal challenges?
  • Dr. Mendeltje van Keulen (Professor of practice/Jean Monnet chair, The Hague University of Applied Sciences): The academic-practice nexus in EU studies.
  • Prof. dr. Ellen Mastenbroek (Radboud University): 1) Constructing the European administrative space and 2) EU enforcement: challenges and strategies.
  • Prof. dr. Bernard Steunenberg (Leiden University): Analyzing EU decision making
  • Prof. dr. Oliver Treib (Münster University): Public opinion, politicization and cleavages.

The course is aimed at PhD students / research master students. This is an advanced course: participants should at least have a BA-level understanding of European Governance or engage in self-study in advance. The course coordinator can provide guidance if requested.

Participation is free for NIG members. The course fee is 500 euro for participants from NIG member institutions and 750 euro for non-members.
